TREATMENT

Over the past 20 years, overall survival rates for all stages of prostate cancer combined have increased from 67% to 89%. Some of the possible reasons for the increase in survival rates include public education, new techniques of early detection, and aggressive therapy. Treatments are usually personalized by your treatment team. The major treatment options for prostate cancer include active surveillance, surgery, targeted focal therapy, radiation therapy, hormone therapy, chemotherapy, immunotherapy, and PARP inhibitors.  A patient’s treatment options will depend on:

  • Age and life expectancy
  • The stage of the disease
  • The advice of a physician
  • Changes to overall health
  • The chances of being cured by treatment
  • Ability to tolerate side effects of therapy
  • Possible interactions with other therapies that the patient must continue
